When I was a kid, the last day of school was a celebration. We couldn’t wait for that day to end so we could finally be free to enjoy our summer! We made plans to get together with our friends during the break and headed home positively gleeful, knowing that our summers would be nothing but fun and adventure.
Unfortunately, that celebration was short-lived since most summers I was sent to my grandparents to help Grandpa for the summer. Grandpa had a small farm where he had some cows, chickens, bees, and a very large garden that someone, namely me, needed to weed and water. I also “got” to milk a cantankerous cow, named Elsie, twice a day, which was an adventure for another day.
Needless to say, it wasn’t long before I was missing my friends and since this was long before texting and face-timing, we didn’t get to see each other all summer.
The first day of school in the fall was almost as joyful as the last. We couldn't wait to get to school to meet up with the gang so we could reconnect and talk about our summers, who is in whose class, hoping that we all had the same teacher, and not the mean one, and trading the food in our lunches because we knew whose moms made the best stuff. It is memories like these that I think about when someone mentions, “the good old days.”
I have much the same feelings today, though in a very different place. Now that I am grown and have a farm of my own, I absolutely love the farmers’ market. The first day of the market is something to look forward to since we haven’t seen each other since the market closed at the end of the season. Getting with the other vendors and our favorite customers and seeing how they made it through the winter is worth getting set up early.
This Thursday will be the first day of Augusta Locally Grown’s Veggie Park market and I am so excited to be there again with the vendors and participants. It will be good to see everyone again!
So come join our reunion at the Veggie Park market and become part of the gang as we begin a new season here at Augusta Locally Grown! We will have fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, and so much more!
We will be at the HUB at Chafee Ave, Augusta on Thursdays from 4-7pm and we hope to see you there!
